7 Snapshots

It has been forever since I was late on one of these posts! David got home on Thursday from taking the Bar and since then we have just been having fun and to be honest I kind of lost track of the days. Also, we are leaving very early Thursday morning for Detroit, then we go to Florida for a week so there is lots of laundry, cleaning and packing to be done around the Harrison household this week.

Better late than never :)

 She loves standing up lately!

At the park with Daddy who is finished with the Bar.

Pool day with the guys that love her.

Avacado! She liked the taste, but wasn't a huge fan of the texture.

I have no idea how this happened! Crazy girl.

We are getting our tan on before vacation. She is going to love going to the pool every day!

July Abs Challenge: Inner and Outer Obliques

Sorry for all of the time in between these posts! On Monday or Tuesday I will get the last one up since by then July will be over. Where has the summer gone?

Even though I haven't been consistent with posting about the abs challenge I have been consistent in implementing it. I haven't missed a day of 10 minutes of abs (other than July 4th) and I am pretty proud of myself. I can't say I am seeing many results yet... but it has to be doing some good.

Onto our abdominal lesson: Surrounding the main part of your abs are your obliques. Your inner obliques are the muscles on either side of your belly button and your outer obliques are toward the side of your stomach, right around the "love handle" area and your waistline.

Inner Obliques
  1. Modified Crunch
Instructions: Modify the standard crunch by lifting up and then twist over to one side, then repeat on the opposite side. Think about taking your shoulder up and over the opposite hip.
Common Mistakes: Make sure that you lift your body up before twisting slightly to the side. Don't pull on your neck as you turn and don't let your elbow draw inward toward your head.
Modifications: To make the exercise a little bit more difficult you can raise your opposite foot up onto your knee, making the shape of a "4". So, if you are working your right obliques, put your left foot on your right knee and then lift your right shoulder up and over toward it.
  1. Bicycle
Instructions: Lift your legs about 45 degrees into the air and pull one knee in toward your body side to side bringing your opposite shoulder toward it. Repeat to the other side.
Common Mistakes: Again, think about bringing the shoulder to the knee, not he elbow and don't pull on your neck.

Outer Obliques
  1. Dumbbell Side Bends
Instructions: Stand with your legs slightly apart and hold a dumbbell in your right hand. Bend over to your right side and then slowly return to a straight standing position. Repeat on your left.
Common Mistakes: Don't collapse your rib cage and slouch forward. You want to think about continuing to stand tall as you bend over to the side.
Modifications: To make this more challenging you can place your left hand behind your head as you bend over to the right.
  1. Heel Touches (I made up this name because I am not sure what they are called...)
Instructions: Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet on the floor. Lift your shoulder blades up off the ground and tuck your chin into your chest. With you arms by your side bend side to side trying to touch the back of your heels with your hands.
Common Mistakes: Relax your neck. Once you get the hang of the motion you can return your hands to the back of your head to support your neck.

That is all for tonight! I love working my obliques and it is important that you don't forget them as you establish an abdominal exercise routine. As always, let me know if you have any questions or any good references/ideas of your own.

Happy Birthday to Me

On Monday I turned 25 years old... and really, it was a pretty good day. However, as birthdays go it was definitely different.

I find that as you get older birthdays become so much less climactic. After a weekend in Lexington just me and Lydia I was ready to relax on my birthday because taking care of a baby without daddy is tiring! So I slept in a little bit and then David and I went to a nice breakfast and walked around a shopping center for an hour or so. We came home and I took a short nap while he packed, and then around 4:00 left to go to Columbus for 4 days. As he was driving me to my parents' house (where I have been staying this week so I wouldn't be alone!) I got a phone call and found out I didn't get the job I applied for... bummer. It was emotionally difficult to get the bad job news and say goodbye to my hubby within 30 minutes of one another on my birthday, but I guess I really am growing up.

There were lots of things that made me feel special on my birthday - my mom cooked me a good meal and my dad brought my favorite cheesecake home for dinner. I got a new pair of awesome shoes and I had a cute baby girl smiling at me all day. But something about this birthday was just a little different, and I have to say that all of the sudden I do feel older.

David will be back tomorrow and the Bar Exam will be over!! We are going to the pool on Friday and then P.F. Chang's for dinner to celebrate, and then on Sunday we are taking a family day to the Newport Aquarium. Life really is good these days but sometimes I am ready to be out of this "in between" time. I know it will happen soon enough and for now I should be very thankful for all of the blessings we are enjoying right now. Keep David in your thoughts and prayers if you would, and I am sure once I am back at my old place and he returns home from Columbus I will have more time to write again!

7 snapshots

Today's photos are brought to you by Meagan White, an old friend and an awesome photographer! We asked her to take Lydia's 6 month pictures and we honestly couldn't be happier with them. Check out Meagan's website (www.meaganwhitephoto.com) and enjoy the snapshots below.

Starting Solid Food

It is crazy to think that it has already been a month since we started giving solid food to Lydia. Like I mentioned in her 6 month post, we wanted to give baby-led weaning (BLW) a shot. The idea behind this new movement is that by 6 months a baby can be offered table foods of particular sizes and textures rather than being fed purées with a spoon. Some of the advantages to this method are convenience, a baby who is less picky, and more positive mealtime experiences. I loved the idea, so a month ago we jumped right in... We gave her whole strawberries, bananas, asparagus, broccoli. And then I got terrified that she was going to choke, so we pulled back a little bit and re-evaluated.

The BLW book obviously talks about the fear of your child choking. It distinguishes between gagging, coughing and choking and I believe makes a great argument as to why introducing solid foods earlier may actually decrease the likelihood that your baby will ever actually choke on food. I read the paragraphs over and over and still I would freak out a little bit. So we took some time to give Lydia some normal baby food and then feed her small chunks of table food just so she would get used to the feeling of something solid in her mouth. One week into solid food our routine looked something like this: organic vanilla yogurt for breakfast with blueberries that are cut into fourths, and a puréed veggie for dinner along with a few small tiny bites of what we were eating. She absolutely loved tasting new things and clearly preferred food with texture and more complex taste over canned, mushy carrots.

As she gained the ability to smash things up a bit with her gums, move them around with her tongue and finally swallow them I knew we were getting closer to the BLW method. For the past two weeks we have definitely been trying to lean more toward giving her solid table food (although a stomach bug forced us to digress a bit). Lydia's all time favorite thing to eat is yogurt, so I won't be taking that from her, and sometimes when we are out or feel like eating something unhealthy for dinner we still pull out the canned baby food, but I think we are getting there. Every 4 or 5 days I try to make a big batch of roasted veggies for Lydia to eat for dinner. Today it was yellow squash, broccoli and carrots. I just tossed them in a little olive oil and out them in the oven on 350 for 30 minutes.

As far as her yogurt goes I add a little bit of texture to it by putting frozen berries and some ate in it the night before so that everything is nice and soft by lunchtime.

I give Lydia tastes of whatever we are eating whenever it is appropriate and mealtimes really are fun! She works on her pincher grasp (picking things up between her thumb and pointer finger) with blueberries, puffs or broccoli while David and I can enjoy eating our own food. Once she gets the grabbing-small-pieces-of-food down I think that the options for what she can eat will open up big time. For now we are left with things that are small enough so as to not choke her that we put in her mouth, or things that are nice and mushy that she can pick up on her own.

Something that I hadn't given too much thought until Lydia started solids was if I would let her have more processed things. In general I let Lydia have anything that we are eating which she can also swallow (minus honey, peanut butter and eggs per pediatrician's orders). I want to be careful about what Lydia eats, but at the same time don't want to impose a double standard. I obviously draw the line at coffee and other things that would be at all harmful, but I figure that if we are eating pizza for dinner then she can suck on the greasy crust. With that being said, one of the things that I like most about BLW so far is that it has forced me to take a good look at what David and I eat on a daily basis. I am much better at incorporating vegetables into our dinners and having fresh fruit cut up in the fridge now that Lydia also relies on our meals for her nutrients.

As we continue on this journey I really want to try to put more energy into finding things that lydia loves to eat which are also easy for me to prepare. I will be sure to toss any good ideas that seem to be working your way! Any mamas out there with advice or easy recipes? All in all I love feeding Lydia real food! She loves it and I can't tell you how cool it is just to watch her experience new things... And how nice it is to go more than two hours in between feelings. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Job interview

Today I had an interview and it went really well! I decided a few weeks back that I would go ahead and apply for a few teaching opportunities while David finishes up the bar and then looks for a job himself.

I really love staying at home but I think that right now while David is still in an "in between" time in his career it is best that I help to support our family a bit. This is one of the main reasons i went back to school- we knew that taking the bar and finding a good job probably wouldn't happen quickly. Also, with so many grandparents around I can easily work part time and know that our girl is in wonderful, loving hands.

I will find out Tuesday if I got it or not, so just pray that whatever is supposed to happen will happen. And if I get it I will be sure to give you some details!

7 months

Wow... this past month has truly flown by! I can't believe how fast the summer is going and how big our Lydia Grace is getting.

Her stats: We don't have any updates on her height or weight but I can definitely tell you that Lydia is getting bigger! She is out of 3-6 month sleepers and bottoms although some of the onesies can still fit.
She feels noticeably heavy this past week  - my biceps get a good workout holding her!

Eating: I know the BLW post still isn't up and I promise it will be soon! But for a short version, eating is going well. We have jumped into solid food and Lydia loves, loves, loves to eat. She eats lunch and dinner each day, and sometimes has an afternoon snack, which supplements breastfeeding. Some of her favorite things to eat are yogurt, blueberries, oatmeal, broccoli, squash, and purred apples and carrots. She also loves puffs (I said I wouldn't do it, and then I did). I would say that we spoon feed her half the time, and the other half we let her try to feed herself. She is doing well with her sippy cup too and loves to drink down cold water when we are out in the sun.

Since she is consistently eating solids I have tried to cut down on the number of nursing sessions she has in a day. I know she is still gaining most of her sustenance from breast milk, but I was ready to be able to be away from her for longer periods of time without having to pump. Now she is nursing every 2.5 hours on average, and then every 4-5 hours at night.

Sleeping: I got jealous of our past selves a few minutes ago when I read her 6 month update... she was sleeping so well!! And now she just isn't. I have heard from so many people that this happens a lot - you get a baby on a schedule and they sleep well for 4-6 weeks and then all of the sudden something changes and it is back to square one. I am not sure if we are back to square one yet, but we are back pedaling. The past 10 nights have been really rough, and it could be just a random change or it could be a combination of teething, her first diaper rash and a stomach bug that she caught. Her "routine" now is getting a bath around 7:45 and then nursing before going to sleep in her crib, and she still falls asleep pretty easily. But rather than waking up at 3, she has usually be waking up at 2, then 4:30, then 6:30 then 7:30. Last night she woke up at midnight and we just gave in and brought her into our bed, where she slept pretty well. I am very tired, and it is hard to be so sleepy again especially because she takes more energy out of me during the days now! I am just hoping that her teeth will eventually break through and her belly will go back to normal and then maybe just maybe she will sleep well.

Naps are okay.. some days she fights them and others she lays down quickly. She is still taking her long nap of the day at home in her swing and as much as I would like to get her out of the swing I am just taking what I can get lately. Hopefully this coming month we will transfer this long nap into her crib! Her other two (sometimes one) naps are shorter and she can take them pretty much wherever which gives me a lot of flexibility in my day.

What she loves: Food, standing, animals, Daddy, swinging on the swing set, the pool, the zoo, maybe sometimes riding in her stroller...

What she hates: Missing her long nap, tummy time, staying up past her bed time, painful teeth and diaper rash! (When her teeth are really hurting her Lydia will clench her jaw, make fists and raise them toward the sky as if to say, "curse you teeth!" It is cute, and so sad.)

Personality/Milestones: Oh my goodness - so much to say here! A couple weeks ago Lydia started to stand while holding on to things and she has only fallen twice. She has also started to jump a lot when you hold her or while she stands in her exersaucer. These days changing her diaper is more of a workout as she rolls her hips side to side, but rolling over still rarely, if ever, happens. There isn't much going on in the crawling department, but today Lydia pulled herself up to standing while she was playing in her stroller at the pool! I really think she may not crawl at all because tummy time still makes her so mad.

As far as a personality goes, she is just shining through so brightly recently. She laughs and smiles all the time and has started to babble! I adore her voice and David and I will just sit around for way too long swapping "ma ma's" and "da da's" back and forth with her. She is very verbal these days with her moni-syllabic babble,  growling, squealing and spit-blowing (if you understand what that means...). I just love it.

Heaven-sent baby items: Nothing right now... we got her a high chair and she really likes it. We got a cheap Graco one from Walmart and it definitely suffices.

Words from Daddy: She is amazing and every day is better. The more that I hear her little voice the more I can't wait until we can actually talk.

Seven Snapshots Sunday

As you heard we had a pretty busy week, so I have some fun pictures from the zoo! We have been taking lots of videos of Lydia lately because she is giggling and babbling so much, however blogger won't let me upload them for some reason. Hopefully I can get that figured out soon so that you can see our girl in action. She is so big all of the sudden!

I love how she has so many different facial expressions lately.

After about 10 tries I got a decent picture of her and I together! I have so few pictures with her :(

 Watching the giraffe with Nana.
Riding the train for the very first time.
She loved it... and loves looking at Uncle Josh.
We rode the carousel also, and I can't put into words how much Josh cracks me up in the picture!

July Abs Challenge: The Main Event

We will start our little abdominal lesson with the main part of your abs i.e. the muscles right under your rib cage and on top of your belly button; the part that we all wish were a 6 pack - or something close to it.

A great exercise to work this part of your stomach is the class crunch. I linked you to the wikipedia article because it is actually pretty good and has a nice picture of how you start and finish a crunch. Instructions: With your knees bent you put your feet flat on the floor, fingers behind your ears, and eyes up to the ceiling then lift your shoulder blades and upper back toward the ceiling with your abs. Exhale on the way up, and inhale on the way down.
Common Mistakes: It is important that the hands behind your head only serve to support it, not to help pull you up. Also, don't use momentum on the way up and down - just take it nice and slow and use your stomach muscles to control your body.
Modifications: There are lots of ways to modify a crunch. You can vary the tempo and range of motion to contract the muscles more or less often. If you lift up and over with your shoulder to each side you will be getting a good inner oblique exercise, and if you let you knees fall to one side you will work the outer oblique (I will go over these parts of the abdominal later). Also, if your are preggo, or if you just want to mix it up, crunches may feel better while lying on a big exercise ball.
My routine: In my normal routine I start our with basic crunches. Since I am used to aerobics, I do everything based on an 8 count. So I do 8 slow crunches to begin (really focusing on my breath) then I do 16 pulses (speeding up the exercise, double time). This is one set, and I repeat it for 4 total sets.

Another effective exercise for the middle of your abs is a plank. The link will take you to another very helpful article that explains how to do the exercise.
Common Mistakes: Don't let your butt sit up high in the air, or sag too low to the ground. You want your body to be completely flat, hence the name of the exercise. Also, don't hold your breath! Be sure to breathe in and out regularly as you hold your body up.
Modifications: If planks are too difficult at first try to let your knees rest on the ground rather than holding yourself up on your toes. Once you get good at them you can add some movement to your plank by letting your hips drop side to side, or by pushing your body weight front toward your shoulders and back toward your toes.
My routine: I always do a warm up plank, holding it still for 32 counts. Take a rest. Then hold a still plank for 8, drop hips side to side for 16, hold still for 8, move front and back for 16, and then hold still for 8 to finish.

There are lots, and lots and lots of ways to work the main part of your abs. The crunch and plank are just a couple to get you started and they are so easy to do at home and incorporate into your routine. Hope you got some good instruction/some new ideas, and stay tuned for the inner and outer obliques.

This Week

I don't know where this week went! Lydia and I were uncharacteristically busy - maybe it is because David is studying (almost) 24/7 these days since the bar is in 10 days, so she and I try to do things to make sure the days don't become too monotonous.

On Tuesday I spent the day "working" I guess. I updated my CV and applied for 3 jobs which I am pretty excited about. I also worked a lot on my Zumba (aka dance aerobics) class, and in the evening I taught it for the first time and it went well!

Wednesday Lydia and I spent the day with Uncle Josh and my Aunt Judy. I have fabric that I want to make bumper pads and a crib skirt out of and since my Aunt Judy is a sewing master we went to her house to get started. We didn't get very far because Lydia was a little bit needy, but that is okay. There is always next week. Once I get them finished I will show you pictures of course.

On Thursday we went to the zoo! It was so much fun and Lydia was wonderful as usual. We went with my mom and Josh and we all had a great time. It was a beautiful day, and even though it was pretty crowded we got to see all kinds of animals. I don't think I will ever get too old for the zoo.

Today we went to Josh's last baseball game of the season and hung out with Jen since she came into town for the weekend. Lydia's teeth have really been bothering her all day- I wish they would go ahead and break through already- so we gave her some Tylenol before bed tonight and I have my fingers crossed that she will sleep well.

Anyway, just thought I would update you on what we were up to this week. It was an exciting one for sure and Lydia and I really had a great time together. I love that she is at an age now where doing things outside of the house is fun and not too stressful :)

Have a great weekend!

Just a few random things this morning...

Thanks go gDiapers and (generous family and friends during our baby showers) I had to go out for the first time yesterday and buy diapers and wipes for Lydia. We use a disposable every night because I really don't want to have to wake her up to change her diaper. Pampers swaddlers have proven to be the best for keeping her dry all night long - like for 12 hours - but when I went to buy them myself yesterday I realized how expensive they are in comparison to other brands! I hesitantly checked out with a pack of Target diapers, and last night they worked just as well. Lydia woke up with a full diaper as always, but no leaks and no rash or anything. It is good to know that the cheap ones work just as well for us.

After our target trip and dinner last night David and I decided to go for a walk (since it was only 85 degrees). We thought we would try to put Lydia in the stroller because she really is getting so much heavier lately and she sat in the jogging stroller for a full 30 minutes! She loved it and it made me so, so happy. I hope that at least she and I can start to make an evening walk our routine and that the stroller will continue to grow on her.

Happy Tuesday! I hope it is a good one for you.

Seven Snapshots Sunday

Happy hot, hot Sunday. I love summer, but seriously I am over this heat lately! Anyway, I know I bombarded you with pictures on Thursday, but here are more.

Soon I will post about our babyled weaning (BLW) experience, but on Thursday I made a big batch of roasted veggies for Lydia to try and eat for dinner. She has been doing so great and she loves real food.

On Saturday morning before David put in another full 8 hour day of studying we all went to Findlay Market - a huge, old famous market in Cincinnati. It was hot, but awesome.

And as usual, Lydia did great in her stroller and got lots of glances from admirers.

This outfit is from Lydia's great aunt Becky - from PARIS! I can't get over how cute it is.

And she shoes... oh my goodness. Thank you Aunt Becky!

Tonight we had another awesome dinner together. One of the things I love most about BLW thus far is that David and I can eat while Lydia eats rather than focusing on feeding her. Of course most of the time we focus on her anyway... commenting on how cute an amazing she is!

I hope you have a great start to your week. Goodnight!

July Abs Challenge: Intro

I have been saying it for months and months so it is time to do something about it... I need to work my abs everyday! Seriously, it takes all of 10 minutes to really fatigue the muscles and it really is the only part of my post-pregnancy body that I am not proud of. So starting on July 1st I made a commitment to do a 10 minute ab workout everyday, and so far I have only missed July 4th (and I honestly forgot since we were running around all day!).

To help motivate me to achieve this goal I decided that I should write about it. I am not at all obsessed with fitness, but in my experience as an aerobics instructor and studying for my certification I definitely picked up some basic knowledge in the area. So as I go on this journey I thought I would take the opportunity to maybe inform you a little bit about the basics of abdominal exercises. Again, it probably won't be anything groundbreaking, but if you are interested in getting stronger tummy muscles the information could be helpful.

I want to start by stating the sad, sad truth. For most people muscle tone, especially in your stomach, depends about 10% on exercise and 90% on what you eat. I wish I could eat pasta and ice cream everyday and make up for it with crunches, but the truth is I can't. As always diet and exercise must work together to help anyone achieve their fitness goals, so on a daily basis I just try to focus on eating healthy and remember that treats are okay in moderation.

With that being said, doing ab exercises really can make a difference too! It is amazing how quickly a 10 minute routine can help you to develop tone and strength throughout your core, and how much a strong core can improve the rest of your strength training.

I am a routine oriented person, so my ab exercises stay pretty consistent from day to day. What I want to do is inform you about the 4 different muscle groups you should focus on when doing abdominal exercises, and show you a few effective ways to work these groups. I will also talk about how to strengthen your back since you should always work your back when you work your abs (in general you should always work opposing muscle groups together). I hope to include pictures, tips and the mistakes that I see people make most often when they are doing each exercise.

In the end I hope that you can build your own ab routine from the exercises that you like and that we can make our tummies tighter and stronger together :)

4th of July

Yesterday we all enjoyed Lydia's first 4th of July together. I was nervous about her reactions to the heat, fire truck sirens, fireworks and staying up past her bedtime but she did wonderfully! I think that the 4th of July may be my favorite holiday - there is just something about a summertime celebration that makes my heart happy.

We all woke up rested yesterday morning. Lydia has been teething and in a lot of pain so David had given her some Tylenol on Tuesday night and it helped her to sleep from 9:30 to 6! I felt like a new person after 7 uninterrupted hours of sleep. We started the day with a delicious brunch with my side of our family: frittata, waffles, cinnamon rolls and fruit. Then at noon we walked a few blocks to the parade.

The only times in my whole life that I have missed this parade were when I was in Chile and when I was at Cornell, so we decided we would start Lydia on the tradition early too. She did great at the parade and just loved looking at all of the people, trucks and floats. She sat in her stroller for the ride up and back, and even hung out a while during the parade when the sun really started to shine. She tried her first popsicle since it was so, so hot and I scored lots of Goetz's caramels!

She was such an amazing baby at the parade. It really made me so proud of her that she went with the flow and wasn't scared of anything. We are very blessed to have an easy, happy baby.

After the parade Lydia got a big serving of yogurt with oatmeal and then a much needed bath at Nana and Papa's. Then we all came back home and took a long nap in our cool, dark basement apartment. It was perfect.

Around dinner time we headed to David's mom's house for a cookout and then continued another long tradition of watching fireworks in a park that was one block away. Again Lydia impressed us all by being awesome and interested.

We left the fireworks and decided to just walk back to our place since our car was blocked in at David's mom's and we were only a few blocks from home. Lydia fell asleep on the way after a long, wonderful day of 4th of July festivities!

Balancing the Beautiful

My life is truly beautiful. Lately I have been overwhelmed at times with all of the blessings that surround me - A beautiful baby girl, a wonderful husband, a generous family, a safe home, a world of opportunity career-wise. There is no way that I deserve all of this and most days I am so thankful for the position that I am in and all of the beautiful things that surround me.

Then there are days when I am overwhelmed in another way - a negative way. How can I possibly do laundry, wash dishes, cook dinner, exercise, play with Lydia, put her down for all of her naps, apply for jobs and pursue my interests in one day?!?! It seems impossible, I get frustrated and grumpy and then things get ugly. Somehow all of the blessings turn on me and become chores or burdens. I enter into a place of being ungrateful; a place of perfectionism; a place where nothing is every good enough.

Looking back I would say that the greatest lesson that I have learned in my adult life is that of balance. I am all for being passionate and going hard and strong after your dream, whatever it may be, but I have also found that sometimes if you put blinders on and run straight ahead once you get where you are going it doesn't feel like you thought it would. I have seen first hand how you can put all of yourself into being "perfect" in one area of your life, and all the time another area is falling apart. I have found that the only thing that I can really dive head first into without being disappointed is the Lord, and His word and the love of His son.

And the irony of this pursuit is that when I am really trying to focus on the eternal and not worrying about the laundry, my schoolwork, my relationships, my future - that is when everything falls into place. When I surrender to the fact that nothing in my life will ever be perfect and instead just focus on balancing all of the opportunities and responsibilities I have been given I can find peace and joy in every day.

Through this blog I don't want to give the impression that I have it all together because I most certainly do not. However, I believe that God does and all that I need to worry about is glorifying Him through all of life's stuff. At this point in our life we do have a lot on our daily schedule, a lot of decisions about the future to make, a lot of people to see and a lot to lose. But my hope is that I will learn to balance all of these beautiful things so that I can truly enjoy them, and maybe along the way I can help you out there with balancing all of the beauty in your life too.

So there you have it - the new theme for this blog: Balancing the Beautiful. I hope you enjoy and continue to follow along.
